Plot

Sissi is slowly adapting to life as empress of Austria but finds it hard to live with her mother-in-law. The Archduchess Sophie adheres to the old rules and constantly interferes with how the emperor rules the empire and their family life. A scandal breaks out when Sissi leaves the Emperor and returns to Bavaria after her first-born daughter was taken away by the Archduchess to educate her. The Emperor follows her and convinces her to retun to Vienna. Sissi's influence grows, and she supports Prince Gyula Andrássy and the cause of the Hungarians for equal standing in the Empire. The movie concludes with her being crowned Queen of the Hungarians.
